Shaping outdoor spaces through light
As evening falls, light reshapes the outdoor environment.
Terraces, gardens and poolside areas gain depth, while architecture, vegetation and pathways become more clearly defined. Outdoor lighting is therefore not merely a functional element, but an essential part of the design, capable of creating atmosphere, enhancing comfort and expressing the identity of a space.
Designing outdoor lighting correctly means achieving a balance between what should be illuminated and what can remain in shadow. The aim is not to light every element uniformly, but to determine precisely where light is needed, creating a harmonious sequence of illuminated areas, architectural volumes and more intimate zones.
Creating different layers of outdoor lighting
An effective outdoor lighting scheme is based on the combination of several light sources.
Functional lighting improves safety around entrances, steps, pathways and circulation areas. Architectural lighting enhances façades, pergolas, walls and textured surfaces. Decorative lamps, meanwhile, make dining, lounge and relaxation areas feel more welcoming.
In outdoor dining and seating areas, soft, warm light is generally preferable, as it creates intimacy without causing glare. Adjustable spotlights, recessed fittings and concealed light sources can instead be used to emphasise the architecture, highlight materials or follow the outline of plants and trees.
Layering different types of light helps create a balanced result, avoiding both overly dark areas and lighting that feels excessively bright.
Integrating light into the architecture
Technical lighting is most effective when it appears to emerge naturally from the architecture itself.
Concealed fixtures, linear lighting details and integrated light points can emphasise stone walls, steps, cladding and architectural volumes. The light source remains discreet, allowing the illuminated surface to become the main focus.
Grazing light can reveal the texture of a material wall, while indirect lighting can define the perimeter of a pergola, covered terrace or portico.
Vegetation can also become part of the lighting composition. Uplighting a tree, highlighting a canopy or creating depth between different layers of planting can visually expand a garden and introduce new perspectives after dark.
Lighting pathways and circulation areas
Entrance paths, garden walkways, steps and changes in level require functional lighting that is effective without being too intense.
Path lights, bollards and ground-integrated fixtures help guide movement, improve safety and define the boundaries of the space. Light should generally be directed downwards to reduce glare and unnecessary light spill.
The positioning of each fixture should follow the rhythm of the path without creating an overly rigid sequence. Alternating illuminated areas with softer shadows produces a more natural result that is better integrated with the landscape.
During the design phase, it is also important to consider for each light fitting the IP rating, resistance to weather conditions, colour temperature and ease of maintenance of each outdoor lighting fixture.
Decorative and portable outdoor lamps

They can be placed beside a sofa, used as table lights, arranged around a swimming pool or moved according to different needs. Rechargeable versions make it possible to create small pools of light without fixed electrical points, giving terraces and gardens a more intimate and personal character.

From the same brand, Origine Outdoor interprets light through a luminous stem that appears to emerge directly from the ground. Sculptural yet understated, it enhances the landscape with soft, indirect and non-invasive illumination.
Although different in form and function, the two lamps share the same discreet approach, introducing light into the garden without interrupting the visual continuity between architecture and nature.

Viabizzuno – Tsukimiso
Designed by Kengo Kuma, the Tsukimiso collection originates from a reflection on the relationship between light, nature and the changing cycles of the landscape. Its name poetically evokes the idea of “moon water”, translating light into an essential, subtle presence that feels deeply integrated with its surroundings.
The Tsukimiso Terra version is specifically designed for outdoor lighting and can be installed either recessed into the floor or with a ground spike.
Its controlled light can be used to highlight vegetation, textured surfaces, pathways and architectural features, creating precise points of illumination without visually interfering with the overall design. It is a refined technical solution, ideal for adding depth and atmosphere to the nighttime landscape.

Vibia – Meridiano
Designed by Jordi Vilardell and Meritxell Vidal, Meridiano combines the functions of an outdoor lamp, a sculptural element and an informal seat.
Its circular structure projects a geometric pattern of light and shadow onto the ground, helping to define pathways and planted areas without relying on conventional technical fixtures.
During the day, it becomes a small architectural feature within the landscape. At night, it produces a soft and atmospheric glow. It is particularly suitable for poolside settings, terraces, gardens and circulation areas.

Catellani & Smith – Syphasera
Part of Catellani & Smith’s first outdoor collection, Syphasera was created to bring the warmth and atmosphere of interior lighting into exterior spaces.
Designed by Maurizio Quargnale in collaboration with the brand’s development team, it combines a slender black stem with an opaline glass cylinder, blending into the landscape as a natural and understated luminous presence.
Available in different heights, Syphasera can be used individually or arranged in compositions to guide pathways, illuminate vegetation and create discreet points of light throughout gardens and terraces.
Its warm 2700 K light and slim profile make it particularly suitable for projects in which lighting should merge with the surrounding environment rather than compete with the architecture.

Designed by Piero Lissoni, Camouflage by Flos is an outdoor wall light created to integrate discreetly into the architecture.
Its circular form conceals the light source and produces indirect illumination across the wall, enhancing façades, entrances and textured surfaces without causing glare.
Available in a range of finishes, including stone- and concrete-effect versions, it can either blend with the surrounding wall surface or become a controlled graphic feature.
