Cappellini: a design story

A bit like Maurizio Costanzo or Pippo Baudo – Italian hosts known for having launched an entire generation of TV faces – one of Cappellini’s distinctive traits is his ability to discover and promote young talents in the field of design. Mixed with the proposals of already established designers, this combination of experience and creative freshness has made the brand a point of reference for all lovers of luxury furniture and accessories.

The origins of Cappellini

Cappellini’s history is rich in tradition and innovation in the field of made in Italy design.

Founded in 1946 by Enrico Cappellini in Carugo, in the province of Como, the company initially focused mainly on the production of office furniture, but in the 1950s it began to collaborate with emerging designers to create innovative, high-quality furniture.

Collaborations with more established names date back to the 1960s and led the brand to establish itself as a world-famous reference in the sector in the 1980s and 1990s. The creation of innovative and avant-garde pieces, such as Marc Newson’s iconic “Embryo Chair” and Jasper Morrison’s “Thinking Man’s Chair”, has helped solidify Cappellini’s position in the contemporary design landscape.

In 2004, Giulio Cappellini, Enrico’s son, took over the creative direction of the company, bringing with him a new energy and innovative vision. Under his guidance, Cappellini continued to collaborate with talented designers and present new “sculptural products” that combine form, function and contemporary aesthetics.

Iconic designs

Cappellini is famous for its production of contemporary furnishings, and over the years it has created many iconic products that have become symbols of design.

The following are just some of the most recognized pieces that have made, and are destined to make, design history:

The “Pinch” coffee tables are known for their minimalist and essential design, a timeless aesthetic that makes them extremely versatile.

Available in different sizes, they are ideal as coffee tables in a living room, side tables next to a sofa or bedside tables in the bedroom.

Oblong by Jasper Morrison

One of the most iconic pieces in the Cappellini catalog and by Jasper Morrison, Oblong is a modular sofa with a minimal design and clean lines, designed with the utmost attention to detail and comfort.

The generous dimensions, the padded seat and the slightly inclined backrest make it the ideal choice in the most disparate contexts.

Gilda Lido by Scholten & Baijings

Cappellini recently presented Gilda Lido, a dining armchair designed by the Scholten & Baijings studio, as well as one of the top novelties of the outdoor collection.

It is a product with traditional and rounded shapes, a passe-partout seat that can be easily integrated with the various tables in the LIDO Cappellini collection.

Dolmen by Giulio Cappellini

The Dolmen table combines the heritage of classic marble with a touch that draws on the artistic influences of the 1980s, shown here through a carefully studied play of shapes.

Available in 3 different colours, a majestic 3cm thick marble top rests on two self-supporting semi-circular bases made of the same material, strengthening the support surface and ensuring an extraordinary tactile experience.
