Meret Oppenheim
In 1971 Dino Gavina introduced “l’opera d’arte funzionale,” ushering in a new approach to furnishing that assimilated surreal objects in daily life. As a result, the Ultramobile collection was born.
Beyond (ultra) furniture (mobile), these pieces engaged the imagination, supplementing rational intelligence with a sense of wonder, where geometry interacted with fantasy.
One of these pieces was the low table designed by Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim in 1939 for Leo Castelli’s avant-garde gallery, which was dubbed the “Bird Leg Table” for obvious reasons. The slim-line legs and taloned feet in polished cast bronze pay homage to classic claw-foot furniture.
