Think of contemporary design aesthetic and pair it together with exceptional materials and craftsmanship. Here you have Poltrona Frau: a unique brand symbolizing the design, grace, and excellence of Made in Italy furnishing solutions.
The origins of Poltrona Frau
Poltrona Frau was founded in 1912 by Sardinian-born Renzo Frau in Turin, and has been based in Tolentino since the early 1960s.
The core business was clear from the beginning: to create furniture that didn’t have to compromise between quality and comfort. Not surprisingly, the name of the brand brings together Poltrona, which in Italian means armchair, and Frau, the surname of the founder and official signature of the company.
The term Poltrona, however, brings together many other meanings. Among these, the ability to create and upholster incredible design seats, from the audiences of cinemas and theaters to the seats of luxury sports cars.
Not by chance, “Interiors in motion” is the name that stands behind the creation of exclusive cars’, private jets’ and yachts’ interiors signed by Poltrona Frau.
…and this is not even the smallest part of Poltrona Frau’s history. If you’re curious to discover more, the brand also welcomes you to the Poltrona Frau Museum, in Tolentino. Trust us, it’s worth visiting!
Leathership
Poltrona Frau has created a neologism called Leathership to define its expertise and culture of the world of leather, which has become a registered trademark for premium quality.
This is a result of 90 years of perfecting its profound expertise in handcrafted work. Master artisans continue to pass on their skill, which has been developed over time, from generation to generation. The firm employs a 21-step leather tanning method (vs. industry typical of 12-15 steps) where the full-grain leather is colored through, so a surface scratch won’t expose a lining below.
This tradition of expertise and craftsmanship is preserved in every piece of Poltrona Frau furniture today, just as it was in the past. The sleek and timeless elegance of each item, as well as the individuality of each one, result from the worker’s talent and a design that elevates hand-crafted skill even in the most modern forms.
Production expert has always been coupled with material research in order to get the most out of the unique Pelle Frau, modernizing it while maintaining its unique softness, warmth, and aesthetic characteristics. The most creative and technologically advanced materials are treated with the same attention and enthusiasm.
Poltrona Frau iconic designs
The aim of Poltrona Frau is to provide high-quality furniture that represents our lifestyle. Some of its iconic designs are:
Vanity Fair: designed by Renzo Frau
Vanity fair has become the emblem of Poltrona Frau. The deliberately volumetric configuration of the Vanity fair armchair saw it become one of the universal icons of Italian design.
Albero: designed by Gianfranco Frattini
The structure stands out for its beautiful cabinet work and its sculpted look, making it the room’s focal point. Albero was developed for usage in interior settings rather than mass manufacture.
Chester: designed by Renzo Frau
Chester has now become one of the Poltrona Frau brand icons, distinguished by its pleated armrests, a suitable finishing touch for the rich capitonné leather processing, which is done entirely by hand.
Dezza: designed by Gio Ponti
The Dezza sofa and armchairs are comfortable, light and very versatile. They have been reissued in a refined new edition that exalts their formal beauty and unique style.
T904: designed by Gastone Rinaldi
The T904 bench, a historic piece by Gastone Rinaldi and reissued by Poltrona Frau, is a project of rare simplicity and elegance.
Sanluca: designed by Fratelli Achille e Pier Giacomo Castiglioni
The intent was ambitious: to take a traditional armchair and renew it by removing the padding section. The result is extraordinary: Sanluca is an iconic, yet comfortable, armchair that maximizes the design of its essence.
Contemporary Designs
Fiorile: designed by Roberto Lazzeroni
The Fiorile side tables have soft, almost organic shapes with rounded edges, that can be mixed and matched to create unique geometric effects each time.
Times: designed by Spalvieri & Del Ciotto
It’s called Times after the well-known font, and it’s got the same incisiveness and clean style as a typographic effort. This bed represents Poltrona Frau’s new vision, where nothing is unnecessary and everything is natural in this beautiful lightness.
Segreto: designed by Andrée Putman
Andrée Putman has created a modern twist on the traditional home desk. The Segreto desk has clean, sleek lines and beautiful proportions, and it features a series of drawers integrated into the desktop.
