The origins of Poltrona Frau
Poltrona Frau was founded in 1912 by Sardinian-born Renzo Frau in Turin, and has been based in Tolentino since the early 1960s.
The core business was clear from the beginning: to create furniture that didn’t have to compromise between quality and comfort. Not surprisingly, the name of the brand brings together Poltrona, which in Italian means armchair, and Frau, the surname of the founder and official signature of the company.

Leathership
Poltrona Frau has created a neologism called Leathership to define its expertise and culture of the world of leather, which has become a registered trademark for premium quality.
This is a result of 90 years of perfecting its profound expertise in handcrafted work. Master artisans continue to pass on their skill, which has been developed over time, from generation to generation. The firm employs a 21-step leather tanning method (vs. industry typical of 12-15 steps) where the full-grain leather is colored through, so a surface scratch won’t expose a lining below.
This tradition of expertise and craftsmanship is preserved in every piece of Poltrona Frau furniture today, just as it was in the past.
